Hi,

In the Excel version, all the match condition cards read the same. Is this right? I'm sure I have seen details of other match condition cards that are included in the game - some seem to affect the batting ratings, for example -.

Is there any chance of finding out the other cards' details?

Many thanks for an interesting website.

Hope you can help.

What a discovery ! Brings back happy memories from the 1960s of many an imaginary test match.

I'm tempted to play a half centenary game now as fireside cricket has passed its half century.

There should be a jointed clip which connects the two. The joint means you can switch between fast and slow bowling. I've just put an almost complete set on ebay - the only things missing from what I can work out are two of the cardboard numbers for the scoreboard.

Ok, it might be over a year later but if anyone is still interested I have just put a set on ebay in great condition. From what I can make out there are only 2 scoreboard numbers missing. A few of the score sheets in the manual have ben filled in but some are blank. I would be more than happy to post overseas if you let me know the destination I can get a quote.

My grandfather Charles Goodall was a director of De La Rue and my father and his brothers can remember him developing Stumpz and several other board/card games such as Round the Horn. They believe he was the main inventor/designer of Stumpz, he used to test the game on them at home and change things as appropriate.
He move to Waddingtons in the 1940s and was involved in developing Cleudo as well.

I believe he is also the very same T.G. Evans referred to on an original Max Walker Match Conditions Card thus...

"T.G. Evans (England) batted for 97 minutes before scoring against Australia at Adelaide in 1947."

Apparently in that match, his innings helped D.C.S. Compton (England) to his second century of the match and thus helped England to avoid a defeat that at one point had seemed highly likely.

Also From Cric Info:
'Evans was not ashamed to tumble, perhaps making the comparatively easy look difficult. But he also executed stumpings with lightning speed, making the difficult look absurdly easy. He was one of the most theatrical of cricketers but, as with all the great performers, the apparent ease masked a self-discipline that the audience never suspected. His greatest secret was the meticulously observed lunchtime siesta ritual, which enabled him to keep fresh and focused.'

'He was equally famous for his night-time roistering, some of which would - in a sterner age - have got him into terrible trouble with the tabloids. His standard shipboard party piece, as Carmen Miranda leading the team in a fancy dress conga, has never quite been forgotten. Many who knew him well believe that behind the extrovert lay a rather sadder figure: he never quite settled into steady post-cricket employment. "For all that Godfrey was a cricketing Falstaff," said his biographer Christopher Sandford, "there was a touch of Hamlet too. He thought and fretted about life more than he let on."'

'But any sadness was well hidden, in later years, behind exuberant mutton-chop whiskers. He remained - even for cricket-lovers too young to have seen him - a symbol of some of the happiest times for English Test cricket, on the field and off it. His CBE, he blithely proclaimed, stood for Crumpet Before Evensong.' John Thicknesse

There are some great pics of him with said mutton vhop whiskers.

:-) Seems like Mr Walker is a popular man these days. Have been in a long conversation with another replaycricket'er over this weekend and have been sharing files and other info on the game. They are developing an "advanced" version of the game ... so look out for that.

I have in the meantime uploaded the file I have. It's missing Match Conditions Cards (of which there are about 50+).

Enjoy.

Hi Don...sorry but it took me so long to find it I couldn't bear to part with it now :-)

I have always found that for the really great games (Stumpz, Balyna, etc) it's worth keeping an eye out for lower costs ones that are a bit damaged but have components, rules, flyers, that you might not have in your good quality one. Def. worth the effort to get a "complete" game.

Your 'third unknown fellow' is almost certainly Jack Robertson, one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year in 1947 although he only played 11 Tests. He opened with Hutton and was a contemporary of Compton and Edrich in the great Middlesex team of that era. His signature can be seen behind him on the photo.

See http://www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/19423.html for more details about him - including the fact that he later named his home "stikiwikits', a rather clever palindome that I imagine would make a good name for a cricket game!
